So you have a bat in your room. Now what? Are you hiding under the covers? Bats throughout Western NY commonly end up inside of our homes in the summer months. Sometimes its due to their residence in your attic or wall space. Other times its a stray bat passing through. At any rate a thorough inspection is the only way to determine if bats are living at your home or business. Our technicians are happy to help you at any hour (emergency rates apply). Please if you see a bat in your home don’t run out and leave all the doors open. Finding a bat in a completely open home is very difficult. If you can quarantine it to one area we have much better success capturing the bat. Also, please understand that the bat is attempting to leave your home and may indeed leave your home before we arrive.
As, far as testing goes. It has been my experience thus far last year and this that the New York State Health Department in Buffalo seems to be happy to test any bat. Rochester’s policy thus far has been more of the only if we really need to. Either way the reality continues to be 1-2% of bats in Western NY carry rabies. If a bat is flying around in your home without your knowledge it is always best to call and consult with them about what should be done with the bat. We offer several services for this. One is leaving the captured bat with you (on porch or garage) so as it can be picked up or taken to health department by you. The other service we provide is delivery of bat by our technician to the health department for a fee. This allows you to not need to deal with the bat at all. Though this service isn’t for everyone. I’m sure you can agree it is nice to have options.
Whenever you need us we will try our best to be available. Please understand this year has proven to be one of the busiest years on record for bat remediation and that same night a bat is flying around your home, we may be traveling to several other homes. We can be reached in Rochester at: 585-771-0822
And in Buffalo at: 716-280-7123.
